Steve Hyett grew up on a small farm west of Naperville and attended Naperville Community High School. Following Lincoln When He Followed Douglas -- The 1858 Lincoln Douglas Debates with Georgiann Baldino
In 2009, the country will celebrate the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. This year, Illinois is commemorating the sesquicentennial of the Lincoln-Douglas debates. In 1858, Lincoln began his campaign for the Illinois Senate by following Stephen A. Douglas around the state in order to take advantage of the crowds. The candidates debated for hours in seven different Illinois cities, battling each other to gain support for their views of America’s future. Our speaker Georgiann Baldino’s PowerPoint® presentation takes the audience 2,100 miles, criss-crossing Illinois, providing images of the towns, the historical markers and memorials to these debates that shaped our country’s future, which took on the dangerous topics of the day, including slavery and states rights. The manner in which these debates were held still influences the political process in this early part of the 21st century.
